Wereldmuseum Leiden is one of the oldest ethnological museums in the world. A walk through the museum opens your view of the world. In Wereldmuseum Leiden, visitors discover that, despite our differences, we are all the same: human.
Context
From Bali to Guatemala, from Oceania to the Arctic and from Mecca to Djenné. The main exhibition of the museum spans across all continents. With objects in large high-density displays. Due to the nature of these displays and the limited space, there are no static object labels.
Challenge
Wereldmuseum Leiden asked Tapart to design, develop, and install an interactive and scalable solution for digital object labeling throughout the museum. Unlocking the rich stories of the objects on display.
We created
Digital object labeling to unlock rich stories
Tapart designed and developed a touchscreen application for digital object labeling. Alongside multiple languages and content tailored for different target groups, the digital labels include high-resolution imagery with zoom capabilities, video content, and 3D scans and models.
Each touchscreen presents a digital replica of a high-density display in the museum. Featuring all the objects of each display, in exactly the same position. Making it very easy for visitors to find and open the stories related to each object on the touchscreens.
Digital labels enable Wereldmuseum Leiden to offer much richer content compared to their static, traditional predecessors. Object labels can be offered in any language and include visual and interactive content like high-resolution imagery with zoom capabilities, video and moving imagery, 3D scans and much more. Enabling Wereldmuseum Leiden to tell the stories of the objects in an engaging and interactive way.
The touchscreen application features a kids mode which can be activated. This will unlock content tailored for kids. This special kids mode is part of the kids’ trail in the museum, highlighting objects on the digital displays associated with the trail.
We developed a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) editor for content editors to manage the content of each touchscreen. With a drag-and-drop editor to arrange objects in the digital display and re-arrange them when the displays are altered or when objects are temporarily off display.
We created an integration with the museum’s Digital Asset Management. Enabling content editors to use images from their DAM, without having to upload images in Tapart’s content Platform. Greatly improving efficiency and consistency for content editors.
For this project we acquired, configured, and installed a total of 92 touchscreens. All powered by industrial-grade fanless pc’s. Including a central server running our Kiosk Management System to manage, control, and monitor the touchscreen installations in the museum. With an intuitive dashboard and administrative controls, the museum is able to self-manage the hardware and scale when necessary.
Big success for visitors and staff
The project has proven to be a big success, both for the visitor and the museum staff. Visitors effortlessly engage with the objects on display to explore their stories. For the museum the entire population is very stable and easy to manage, enabling them to focus on content creation and storytelling instead of hardware management and maintenance.
Tapart was a great partner to work with. The communication was clear, and the guidance was excellent. They were driven to achieve the best possible result.
